Free E-mail
Welcome to FreebieList.com's Free E-mail category, featuring reviews of
Web-based e-mail services, POP3 accounts, e-mail software, newsletters and
autoresponder services. The Internet is the most popular activity on the
Internet and there are numerous free services available. If you're receiving
too much spam (junk mail), or if you require a new e-mail address, you've
come to the right place! Visit the sections below for our reviews of the
Web's best e-mail freebies. If you happen to stumble across an outdated
link, we'd very much appreciate it if you could
report it. Thanks for
visiting and enjoy your time freebie hunting!
Free Web-based E-mail
Services
A popular and convenient way to keep in touch with
friends and family is to get a Web-based e-mail address. In this section we
review free e-mail services that can be accessed from anywhere, provided you
have an Internet connection and a Web browser. You'll find that many
providers here allow for file attachments, have filtering options and
although may be supported by adverts, are pretty complete in what they have
to offer.
Free
POP3-based E-mail Services
If you're mainly situated in one location, a
POP3-based e-mail account allows far greater freedom than the majority of
Web-based e-mail accounts. Rather than accessing your mail via a Web
browser, POP3 e-mail services allow you to download messages to an e-mail
client, such as Outlook Express or Eudora. You can then read downloaded mail
offline, allocate filters, and perform more advanced tasks.
Free E-mail Programs
In this section, we take a look at the Internet's best
e-mail freeware applications. If you're in need of a new e-mail client, or
want a utility to help combat spam, you'll likely find it in here. Many of
these free e-mail software tools make excellent "add-ons" to existing
applications, like Microsoft Outlook Express. The majority of these programs
have small file sizes and can be downloaded within a few minutes on
broadband connections.
Free E-mail Auto
Responders
Auto Responders are ideal tools to use when you're on
holiday or need to remember certain events, dates or appointments. In a nut
shell, an auto responder is similar to a telephone answering machine. It
sends an automated e-mail message to people who attempt to contact you
whilst you're away. Reminder services send you a message a few days (even
weeks) before an event, so you can plan ahead for any occasion.
Free E-mail Newsletters
E-mail newsletters (or e-zines) are normally sent
weekly or bi-monthly and will arrive in your inbox similarly to how a letter
arrives through the post. Opt-in style newsletters can cover a wide range of
topics, such as promotion, jokes or entertainment, whilst announcement lists
are only sent when there's important news or Web site information. All these
can be unsubscribed from and are totally free to receive.
Free Competitions
Welcome to FreebieList.com's free competitions section. Here, you will
find some of the Internet's best free contests, sweepstakes and money making

If you live in the UK and want to try your hand at
winning cash or other fabulous prizes then this is the place to go. Here, we
review the best free competitions for UK residents, all of which are
completely free to enter. Please remember, though, that some of these free
competitions may require you to be over the age of 18. Many contests also
have terms and conditions for entry, so please read them before
participating.
Free Contests in the USA and Canada

Money and Prizes
Competitions, giveaways, sweepstakes and other free
opportunities to make money online come in many different forms. Some reward
you for answering surveys, some are entirely unique, some give you cash
simply for surfing the Web, and some are available globally. Although few in
numbers and hard to obtain, competitions such as these have always proved
very popular. Try your luck with our selection!
Desktop Freebies
Welcome to our desktop freebies section where you'll find free
screensavers, skins, wallpaper, and other free desktop stuff. If you happen

Free Internet Service Providers
In this category we feature the various free Internet access providers
available. If you have one, you may take your speedy broadband connection
for granted. Indeed, you may have even grown to depend upon it. So, as you
can imagine, all chaos can ensue if there are technical difficulties at the
ISP or with your telephone provider. Some of our readers have already had
the misfortune to deal with broadband connections on the blink. Fortunately,
for these "worst case" scenarios, the Internet serves up more than enough
"free" Internet providers. Keeping a spare dial-up modem within easy reach
will allow you to access the Net - albeit a bit slowly - even if your
primary connection experiences problems. The free ISPs we review here offer
free access to the Web via dial-up (and you only pay for the time you spend

if you could report it.

Net

easy way to access to the Internet. They offer the usual tools you'd expect

every month. There's one catch though, you must surf with an advertisement

(U.S. and Canada Only)
Beeb -
The BBC's free Internet access service, Beeb.net is another fine example of
how Internet access is taking Britain by storm. Here, you'll receive free

a truckload of other goodies, such as 30MB free Web space, numerous e-mail

Free Jokes and Computer Pranks
In this category, FreebieList.com takes a look at the Internet's best
free joke sites. If you happen to stumble across an outdated link, we'd very
much appreciate it if you could
report it.
Funny.co.uk
- "The UK's Premier Comedy Site" has an excellent design and is loaded with
free jokes to read online plus links to other humourous Web sites.
Funny.co.uk is updated frequently and visitors can add their own jokes or
rate those currently being displayed. As well as providing a cocktail of
humor, Funny.co.uk features an online forum where users can chat or debate
issues.
Jokes
Place - A neat and well-maintained site featuring a huge collection of
free jokes, organised into various categories. Here, you'll find jokes
concerning animals, the workplace, blondes, bar jokes and more. The content
is suitable for all ages, and you can also search for jokes, or pass them on
to your friends or family via their "tell a friend" feature. The site is
regularly updated so be sure to check back often.
Yahoo!
Kids Jokes - A fine free jokes site from Yahoo!'s kids section. This
site primarily targets children, although adults will likely find the jokes
entertaining as well. Yahoo! Kids separates their jokes into categories,
which include: Animals, People, Music, Sports, Science and Nature, People,
Weird and Wacky, etc. They'd also appreciate any jokes that you can suggest
to them.
> Yahoo! Kids has replaced the now defunct
Yahooligans! site. Rather than concentrating on a directory of family
friendly links, the site now focuses on jokes, games, e-cards, horoscopes,
etc. There is still plenty of content here to keep the kids entertained!
Aha!
Jokes - A superb, family friendly free jokes Web site, featuring jokes
in various categories. One liners, office jokes, political jokes, kids
jokes, gender jokes, bar jokes and more can be found here. To top this off,
Aha! Jokes also serves up funny pictures by category and even includes funny
videos and audio. As well as this, they also include a regular poll so you
can cast your opinion.
Mefco's Random Jokes Server - Here, you'll find a large database of
free, random jokes in many categories. You simply select a topic, then read
the jokes that appear under that subject matter. Cycling through the jokes
is very easy and can be done by using their "next joke" link. Short funny
stories are also included here by title and they host a free, opt-in jokes
mailing list for all visitors.
Down Hoax Fake Download - This program will scare the pants off your
friends. Down Hoax simulates the download process on a computer.
Inexperienced computer users who run this program will think that they're
downloading files from an adult Web site. It isn't true though. After the
simulated download has finished, the program announces itself with a "fooled
you!" message box.
Click Me! - Here's yet another free prank program for our mischievous
visitors. Click Me! displays a "click me" button on the computer screen.
When the victim tries to click on the "click me" button, it will move to
another location on the screen. Pressing "Ctrl Alt + Del" will end the task
on Windows based machines. The Click Me! program can be very annoying if
you're an inexperienced user.
Funny.com
- Here's one of the few Web sites on the Internet that tracks which jokes
you've read. Becoming a member of Funny.com is completely free (and well
worth it). They feature hundreds of jokes, all of which can be browsed
though using an online search engine. Here, you'll also find some
interesting online comics and a "league" of the funniest jokes, all rated by
Funny.com's visitors.
Fake Format - "Fake Format" pretends to format your hard disk and is
perhaps the most terrifying program an inexperienced computer user will have
to face! Fake Format also simulates the sound of your hard disk to add extra
realism. With such a small file size, this program is a highly recommended
download. It will function on most Windows machines (including NT
Workstation).
Comedy Central
Jokes - At this site, you're bound to find the perfect joke for any
occasion. Comedy Central has jokes on all kinds of topics, including those
featuring lawyers, sports, rednecks, college, animals, technology, etc. If
you've found a particularly funny joke that you'd like to share, this site
has a neat feature where you can submit a joke for inclusion.
Fake Delete - Here's another fine "RJL Software" program. Fake Delete
simulates the deletion of the C:/Windows directory. It looks very realistic
and best of all, since the only way to stop it is by using "Ctrl, Alt +
Delete", inexperienced users will result to turning off at the power or
shouting for help. We've found it works best on stand alone computers, as
their hard disk is usually "C:/".
Open/Close CD - A simple program that opens the CD-ROM drive when
activated. It works best when a shortcut is made to a popular program, e.g.
Microsoft Word. When a user clicks on the shortcut, Open CD-ROM will
activate and the CD drive will open. Don't be too excessive though.
Eventually CD drives can break or malfunction because of this program being
used repetitively.
Funny Ville - An easy to navigate Web site that offers clean and funny
content in the form of jokes, pictures, sounds, commercial video clips,
Flash animations and more. Each page on the Funny Ville site includes a
voting bar where visitors can cast their vote to ensure the funniest items
are constantly available for all to enjoy. Their section devoted to pictures
is particularly funny.

Free Internet Privacy Services
In this category, we review the Internet's best free privacy services. If
you happen to stumble across an outdated link, we'd very much appreciate it
if you could report it.
Ad-aware - The most popular free "anti-spyware" utility, this complete
anti-spyware solution detects and removes all kinds of dodgy files,
including trojans, worms and "malware" (malicious software purposely
designed to harm computers). Ad-aware thoroughly scans your system registry
and other folders to safely delete any rogue packages that may be attempting
to relay information about your surfing habits to advertising companies.
Inexperienced computer users will also find Ad-aware easy to use. Its
"wizard style" interface allows for the step-by-step deletion of spyware.
> With over a quarter of a billion downloads,
Ad-aware is considered the anti-spyware program of choice for home computer
users.
> You may download updates free of charge to ensure the program is capable
of detecting the latest threats to your system.
Eraser - A
fine privacy and security tool for Microsoft Windows systems. Using a drag
and drop facility, Eraser permanently deletes files so they cannot be
recovered, even by the most advanced software. It's ideal for covering your
tracks or for removing sensitive information from your PC. No uninstall
utility (free or commercial) can bring back the files once you have deleted
them with Eraser.
The-Cloak - A fine anonymous surfing tool that hides your identify from
sites you visit, blocks cookies from entering your PC, allows you to remove
Java applets and even post to message boards in complete privacy. The-Cloak
carries everything from its own servers, meaning your IP address is never
disclosed, sometimes even your local time isn't given away. It's a useful,
although fairly basic free service.
Cyber Defender Free - A free, advert-supported Internet security suite.
This freeware program offers anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-phishing, pop-up
blocking, spam blocker and password alert capabilities to help you stay
secure on the Net. CyberDefenderFREE claims to inoculate viruses faster than
other security solution because of its patent-pending Early Detection
technology, which relays threats via a peer to peer distribution network.
(11 MB)
Comodo
Free Firewall - A free and award-winning personal firewall, offering a
reliable level of protection against hacker attacks. Comodo secures against
both internal and external threats, making your system far more secure than
if you only used the bundled firewall application with Microsoft Windows.
This program also prevents Trojan intrusions and safeguards your PC from
personal data theft. Functions on Win 2000, XP and 2003.
ZoneAlarm - ZoneAlarm is widely regarded as the most popular freeware
firewall. This program protects your computer from malicious hacker attacks,
viruses and intruders. It will also notify you of any attempted break-ins
and then advise on how to deal with them. As a user, you can customise your
level of protection and also surf the Internet in "stealth mode", invisible
from the outside world.
> Whilst ZoneAlarm is a reliable firewall for home
usage, users of older computers have often complained of the program hogging
system resources. A system specification of Windows 2000 Pro/XP, with a
Pentium III (450 MHz) processor or higher is recommended.
> ZoneAlarm is free for individual and not-for-profit
charitable entity use (excluding governmental entities and educational
institutions).
Ashampoo Free - This free firewall helps to protect your computer system
from hacker attacks and other security threats. The program's Configuration
Assistant, complete with "wizard style" interface, allows users to set up
the appropriate level of protection with minimal hassle. Ashampoo has an
impressive number of features and monitors both incoming and outgoing
traffic. Local and network activity can also be monitored. Size 3.8 MB.
Spyware Blaster - Are you wary about spyware? You needn't be if you
install SpywareBlaster. Unlike similar programs that scan, detect and then
clean your computer of any programs attempting to monitor your actions,
SpywareBlaster takes a different route and prevents them from being
installed in the first place. Nobody has to put up with spyware thanks to
this clever little program.
Hush
Mail - Provides an online e-mail service with extra security features.
You can send mail to any person with an address, but to take advantage of
their high 1024 bit encryption, your recipient must also have a HushMail
account. After the hiccup with "Hotmail hackers", you should seriously
consider this if handling mission critical e-mail. HushMail is robust,
solid, reliable and extremely secure.
mail2web - This service allows you to securely access your POP3 e-mail
inbox from anywhere in the world. Ideal for when you're on the move (or when
you need to access your messages remotely), mail2web functions very much
like any other Web mail interface, and allows you to send mail, forward,
compose and even delete messages on the fly. They also support WAP
compatible mobile phone access.
Cookie
Monster - Follow the "Utilities" link at this site then scroll down to
access the Cookie Monster information section. This program is a neat
freeware utility, created so that you may have full control over cookies
left on your computer. It allows you to scrutinise all cookies on your
machine then delete the ones you don't want and save the ones you wish to
keep (e.g. log-in details).
Windows Defender - This free program developed by Microsoft provides a
range of countermeasures to help protect you from spyware and similar
security threats. Windows Defender's simple interface is a joy to use and
enables you to both monitor and protect vulnerable system areas. The program
can detect spyware before it causes any harm or eliminate rogue files once
they become installed on your computer.
> Microsoft provides automatic definition updates for
Windows Defender to ensure the most recent security threats can be
counteracted. To benefit from this, you must update the definition file
regularly.
> Unlike other "anti spyware" programs, Windows
Defender constantly runs in the background and springs into action if a
security threat is identified.
ScramDisk -
ScramDisk is a program that allows the creation and use of virtual encrypted
drives. You create a container file on an existing hard drive which is
allocated a specific password. This container can then be mounted by the
ScramDisk software which creates a new drive letter to represent the drive.
Only the correct password allows access. Without it, files are inaccessible.
/p>
Scrub
XP - ScrubXP runs automatically when you start up your computer and
offers a number of features, ideal for keeping your computer private. When
activated, the program will delete all Internet Explorer History entries and
temporary files, cookies and documents listed in the Windows "Start" menu.
The Recycle Bin is also emptied and auto-complete on IE is refreshed. Follow
the "Scrub XP" link (left hand nav bar).
CookieCruncher - This is one of the best known cookie-killer programs on
the Internet. The idea behind this piece of kit is to stop the activity of
cookies on your machine. After browsing, all cookies collected can be
deleted instantly, meaning any site looking for the information it cached
earlier won't find it. Note: Cookie Cruncher is always being updated and now
is very easy to upgrade.
Handybits
File Shredder - This cool program works in a similar way to a virtual
shredding machine, permanently deleting your "sensitive" files so that they
can never be retrieved. To use the program, you simply drag amd drop
documents, etc. into a window, which in turn prompts you to confirm the
deletion. If you accept to delete the document, it will be deleted, never to
be read again.
MultiProxy - MultiProxy is a freeware proxy server design specifically
to protect your privacy whilst surfing the Internet. It can also completely
hide your IP address from anybody by dynamically connecting you to various
"non-transparent" anonymising public proxy servers. Note: this free version
of MultiProxy is for personal and non-commercial use only. You may share it
within the guidelines.

Free Software
Welcome to our free software category, featuring only freeware
programs (software that you can download with no restrictions). If you
haven't already realised, the Internet is home to many applications that
are freely available. Better still, many of these programs are as good
as, if not better in some respects, than their commercial counterparts.
Whether you need some anti-virus protection for your PC or a utility to
help you download files over the Web, you're sure to find something of
interest here. We are constantly looking to improve this category, so if
you would like to suggest another program, please
submit it. If you
happen to stumble across an outdated link, we'd very much appreciate it
if you could report it.
Thanks for visiting and enjoy your time freebie hunting!
Anti-Virus Freeware
With hundreds more viruses being created every
month, all computers should have some form of virus protection. Here,
you will find a round-up of the Web's best freeware anti-virus checkers
and cleaners, which stop all kinds of "dodgy" files from entering your
PC. You'll no doubt be pleased to hear that the majority of programs
listed here provide comparable protection to most commercial packages.
Free Chat Programs
Chatting is the very reason why many people choose
to go online. The Internet has opened up many new methods of
communication, one of the largest being "chat". In this section, we
review the best freeware chat programs, such as messenger services. They
are ideal for keeping in touch with friends or family and provide many
features, such as text chat, audio support and also video conferencing.
Free Compression
Tools
Downloading files over the Internet normally
requires a compression utility such as the famous "WinZip" or if you're
on an Apple-Mac, "Stuffit Expander". These archive documents into

of these programs have small file sizes and can be downloaded within a
few minutes on broadband connections.
Free File Sharing
Programs
This section at FreebieList.com reviews some of
the Internet's most useful programs that allow you to share files
(sounds, images, documents, etc.) with other users of the same program
type. Although in recent years "file sharing" has sparked a huge amount
of controversy over copyright ownership, many P2P (Peer to Peer)
programs still exist and can be very useful search tools when used
responsibly.
Free
FTP Programs
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is an Internet
protocol that enables users to exchange files over the Internet by
either uploading to a Web server or downloading to a computer. In this
section, we review a number of the Web's best freeware FTP programs.
You'll also find reviews of free download managers that allow you to

but there are numerous things that you can do to protect yourself (and
your privacy) whilst online. Our "Free Security Programs" category was
created in order to review the Net's best software that will protect you
from hackers, code breakers, password stealers and more. Don't be caught

arrival of MP3, many are still available on the Internet. Famous speeches,
snippets of audio and simple tunes are all ready for download.
Free MP3
Sound Files
MP3s are fast becoming the most popular sound file. In
fact, by the time you read this, they will probably have become the most
talked about, shared and most downloaded audio file on the Internet. MP3s
are very large and will not fit onto a floppy disk unlike MIDIs or WAVs.
MP3s have CD quality sound and to play them, you'll need a program such as
Winamp, (see our software section for audio apps).
Free
Internet Radio
During the past few years there has been a big
increase in the number of radio stations broadcasting over the Net. Ideally,
you'll require a broadband connection to listen to the webcasts hassle-free,
although 56K dial-up modems will do if you don't mind the odd broadcast
interruption. Here, you can tune-in to international stations or even listen
to more "local" or "regional" stations. The choice is entirely yours.
